An inspiring Advent journey into the heart of the Gospel message as you prepare for Christmas.
Everyone loves the Christmas story. But the story of the baby in the manger is the culmination of a thousand other stories. It is the focus of the story of the Bible and the story of human history.
This book has 24 short meditative readings working through Bible stories from Genesis to Jesus. Each day includes ideas for reflection, prayer and application, designed to excite you about the gospel message in the run-up to Christmas Day.
As you prepare for Christmas, get a fresh insight into the full script of the nativity, the story of our world, and the plotline for the rest of your life...

This accessible devotional book helps us to experience a daily delight in discovering how our story connects with the ongoing story of Christ and all he is doing in the world. By drawing on contemporary examples from everyday life and words of worship from believers across the centuries, Tim Chester highlights passages of Scripture that challenge us with the down-to-earth implications of living lives that are centred upon Christ.
Anyone used to the sometimes trite and superficial comments in a daily devotional is in for a rude awakening with Tim Chester's Advent devotional The One True Story. In characteristic fashion, Chester blends profound Biblical insight with in-depth theology, heart warming illustration and relevant application. One day all daily devotionals will be built like this (we hope!) Until then, I heartily suggest you give Tim Chester's a try
Every year our advent candle builds expectation for Christmas, but it burns down to nothing. This wonderful book will create expectation and leave you feeling moved, joyful, thankful and awestruck. You will not be empty-handed or empty-hearted after spending a month with these devotions. Along the way, you will learn to see the riches of Christ in the Old Testament and feel a fresh impetus to see centrality of the story of Jesus in the pages of your Bible.
It is hard to see how readers of this inexpensive book would not be stimulated to pursue the themes of grace, judgment, faith, salvation, sin, temptation and the ‘true people of God’, as they are developed in the biblical story from beginning to end.... continue reading
Each chapter takes five or six minutes to read comfortably out loud, and closes with a thought for reflection, accompanied by a prayer or a hymn. Those new to the faith will find the gospel opened up to them and seasoned pilgrims will discover much to encourage. Preachers will love the wealth of material here to bring freshness to Christmas ministry, as well as to strengthen their grasp of biblical theology. Highly recommended.... continue reading
I read one chapter each morning during Advent before my usual time of prayer. C of E vicars can quickly get Christmassed out with all the carol services, but these refreshed my soul. I'll be using Tim's other book next year!
Gripping. Couldn't wait to pick it up each morning. A great preparation for celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.
Yes, I was immediately impressed with this book and having read the first few pages I ordered a further 20 copies to pass on to friends. However, one thing has frustrated both me and some of my more discerning friends. We discovered a total of at least 25 typographical errors (which I will submit separately). I personally found this most disruptive as it therefore meant that I was having to go back and re-read a paragraph to see if I had misunderstood its sense. I strongly suggest that you employ a more experienced proof-reader before re-publishing next year.
This is a truly amazing book, which i am thoroughly enjoying. It is easy to read and has helped me in preparing for Christmas in a way i have not done before. I have learned things like the 2nd Adam and 2nd Joshua. I would highly recommend it it for either own use or in small groups.
I am on day 17 of these advent readings. Every day I have been thrilled by the links drawn by Tim Chester between the Old Testament promises and shadows and the fulfilment and reality in Christ. What a stimulating and heartwarming lead up to Christmas! But this book is not just for Christmas! It could be used with profit at any time of the year. I warmly recommend it.
This book has helped me understand more of who Jesus is by helping me appreciate more fully how Old Testament scriptures are fulfilled in Him (often with insights which are fresh to me). The length of the chapters, application and prayers are helpful to encourage meaningful meditation in a busy season!
this is not a watered-down advent devotional; it is quite meaty. My husband and I have enjoyed reading this together; it has sparked good conversation as well as awe in both of us.
Really enjoying this (good see Clive an old friend is too!) - my wife and I are reading One True Story through Advent and we are getting so much out of it. The storyline, input, meditation, carol and prayer work together beautifully. Our only complaint (and why I have given it only 4 stars) would be that there is an almost daily printing error which could have been picked up by slightly better proof reading. It's not a major fault but it is a shame when there are so many. Other than that - fantastic.
Stuff yourself with chocolate every day or renew your mind every day. I bought this as an advent calendar with a twist for all of my small group. And boy are we enjoying it with all the insightful comments on scripture. It makes getting up in the morning a sheer delight
