Pitch perfect. Deep enough to equip the reader for the trickiest passages, without overwhelming them with detail. We used this book in our congregation and the result was a well-fed and suitably challenged church.

Soundly doctrinal, eminently practical, and beautifully devotional, this just might be the most accessible yet serious commentary on James available. I don't like to admit this, but I find many biblical commentaries tedious and boring—but there's nothing dry or abstract about James For You. Whether you're planning to preach or teach James or to listen to these ancient words to redirect your own life, Sam Allberry is a wise and faithful guide.

Precious additions to any Christian's library

Gary McMurray, July 6th 2016

Sam's writing is clear, and easily accessible, with plenty of illustrations to explain the Bible text. … I had always previously imagined that James' letter was a kind of scattergun of wise words, almost like Proverbs in its randomness. Sam works hard to try to discern the structure of the letter. I found this really helpful … The structure seems to make a lot more sense, having read the book.... continue reading

“Challenging and Readable”

(Review written for 'James For You (ebook)')

James is a challenging book on many levels. Sam does a great job of taking it to a deep level, in a very readable way. We've used for our youth group (13-17) and also our community group (older generations mainly!). Would recommend.

“A helpful book to accompany your studies”

I used this as a companion when reading James and preparing notes for children's work to go alongside the sermon series we were doing. I found it easy to use and simply put, meaning that I could adapt what I was reading and learning myself for the children.
I would recommend this as a book to read alongside James and have extended times of study. It has depth without being overly academic and impenetrable.

“Another book in a great series that, so far, hasn’t failed to be both helpful academically and personally challenging”

I was intending this to be a book that helped me read the Bible regularly rather than act as a commentary when preparing a talk and I think it did the former really well. The book is helpfully divided into sections which are manageable for a daily reading, and the verses in James referred to are included in the text. This makes it ideal for studying James if you don’t have a Bible handy although cross-references are listed but not included in the writing.

The book gives a helpful and detailed overview of the book of James whilst helping you dig deeper in to different verses in the book. It would be useful if you’re preparing a small-group bible study to help you gain a thorough understanding of passages you are trying to teach others get to grips with. It’s also really helpful for personal study to help you develop your own understanding. Another book in a great series that, so far, hasn’t failed to be both helpful academically and personally challenging.

“This is a great entry-level commentary that does what it says on the ...”

This is a great entry-level commentary that does what it says on the tin—introduces the epistle of James at a level that engages everyone. Sam Allberry is a good writer and this shows in prose that is clear and well organized. He is quick with an illustration and manages to explain more complex passages from James in a straight-forward way.

Growing Christians will appreciate this volume for its clarity. Allberry doesn’t try to obfuscate or mystify with theological jargon, but rather he explains, illustrates, and applies the text at every point so that his reader understands James’ letter. The publisher has made the book even more accessible by attractively laying out the text. There are also helpful extras like: questions for reflection at the end of each chapter, and a glossary defining key terms and technical words.

This commentary also does a great job of negotiating James’ more tricky texts (ie James 2 on faith & works and James 5 on healings) and manages to present sensible explanations for these parts of the letter. Specifically, in thinking about how to understand James 5, Allberry helpfully summarizes the various interpretive options and then presents a very convincing case that does not undermine the prospect of the miraculous, but at the same time never strays down the errors of ‘health and wealth’ heretics.

Small group leaders and preachers will also benefit from this book because it provides well thought-out exposition and points of application. And while intentionally not an academic volume, James for You is thorough enough that it will give a budding scholar a good starting place or a quick and reliable go-to reference to James’ epistle.

I would recommend this commentary because it is faithful in explaining the text of the Bible, it is written from an evangelical perspective, and because it is particularly good at applying the lessons from James to everyday life. I was given this book free from the Publisher in exchange for an honest review.
