This is unlike any book I have ever read. Seth is a great writer, and this work of poetic theology is as beautiful as it is faithful. It has impacted me to the extent that even walking in the park is a new experience—one of awe and wonder.

With the heart of a poet and the hand of a novelist, Seth beautifully describes all that becomes too easily obscured when it comes to the mystery and majesty of nature. Prepare to be captivated anew by the profundity of God’s glory reflected through his magnificent creation. Enlighten and delight your mind!

Author, Deeper Still

Theology, nature, wonder and creativity are woven together into this beautifully written work of art. Infused with worship, Christ-centred and thoroughly biblical, this book inspires you to worship as you wander through creation, to see more than you’ve ever seen and to learn to respond, ‘Wow!’ This is undoubtedly one of the best Christian books I’ve read; I loved every word.

“Inspiring and Encouraging”

3.5 stars, rounded down.

This short, thought-provoking book explores how nature speaks to God's glory and character. Author Seth Lewis explains that nature is one form of God's revelation to mankind, and he explores how we can use Scripture as the translation point for understanding some of nature's messages. The first part of the book focuses on explaining these core concepts to readers who may be unfamiliar with them, and Lewis also weaves in anecdotes about breathtaking and meaningful experiences he has had in the natural world.

The second part of the book describes how different aspects of nature speak to us, and how we can respond. Chapters cover topics like the ocean, light and darkness, and the nature of time. Lewis highlights important lessons that we can learn from different parts of creation, and one topic that especially resonated with me was the idea that God chose to hide some of his most strange and intriguing creatures in the ocean depths, without needing people to see or appreciate them for it to be worthwhile. Lewis encourages readers to know that their work is worthwhile too, even when no one sees or honors it.

The Language of Rivers and Stars: How Nature Speaks of the Glories of God is an encouraging book that will appeal to nature-lovers. However, even though this is a good book, I sometimes felt like it was missing something. I would have liked a little more depth, whether it was more practical insight or some thoughts about what nature and natural metaphors meant to the original audience of Scripture. This book can inspire anyone, but is best for people who are new to thinking about this topic.

I received a complimentary copy from the publisher, and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

“Excellent!”

This book is an in depth look at the ways God speaks to us through His creation, with links to the scriptures that reveal each truth. It is a loving tribute to the powerful communication one can receive when they immerse themselves in nature. The author has given us a gift that changes the way we can experience God's majesty. I have purchased two more books as gifts to share with loved ones.

“This book made my heart sing!”

As someone who loves nature and often sees 'God's fingerprints' in it, it wasn't difficult to connect with the book's ideas and message. I loved the poetic style of Seth Lewis's writing - the language and images he uses are striking and memorable, but the book is also incredibly readable - and I was hooked from the first page.
The book has been a great encouragement to think more deeply about the messages from the Creator written into the natural world - across the whole scale of size, from the tiny to the unimaginably huge.
The book made my heart sing a fresh song of praise to the Creator of a universe that is packed full of wonders - and it helped that I was reading it whilst on holiday in a part of the UK that may not be as spectacular as some other places, but is still stuffed with beauty. As Seth Lewis writes in the final chapter: "don't overlook the fact that you have more than enough to wonder at right in front of you, right now."
An encouragement to slow down - and look.
I will be recommending this book to any who will listen!

“Draw close to the Creator”

I just finished an amazing book by Seth Lewis, The Language of Rivers and Stars: How Nature Speaks of the Glories of God.

I attempted to describe this book with one word, and I came up with several that would be appropriate. Beautiful. Informative. Fascinating. Insightful. Biblical. Delightful. Thought-provoking. But perhaps the best word is worshipful. After reading it as I look out my window or walk outside my heart is filled with awe as I observe all that God has made.

If you love nature and desire to grow closer to the Creator, consider picking up a copy.

“Breath of Fresh Air”

This book sparked my interest. I bought two and read it with a friend. It was so thought-provoking as to the connections between God’s creations - especially us with Him, I bought four more to share with others whose souls are stirred by the great outdoors.

“Inspiring and Profound”

If you're not already a nature-lover, this book will probably turn you into one. I knew the Bible talked about nature and God's creation, but Seth Lewis really illuminates nature and the corresponding Bible passages in a new and inspiring way! God's creation really does continue to speak and pour forth knowledge and this book helps you to recognize that and see the Bible as our Rosetta Stone, interpreting what God has revealed to us.

Seth goes through the seven days of creation (including the day of rest) and talks about each thing, providing personal experience, sharing scientific facts, coordinating with Scripture, and offering application and response to each reflection.

I totally recommend this book and really enjoyed reading it!

“Excellent perspective”

This book was an amazing summary of the relationship between the created and the creator! So many eye opening revelations that illustrate the love our Father has for us. Nature has always pointed me towards Him, but this book helped me understand that was His intention all along.

“We will draw near, lean in and embrace...”

Seth rightly points out that for many people, being in the natural world, surrounded by beauty, is often a way for us to feel a peace and connection to God, the Creator. So his aim in this book is to help the reader experience the beauty of creation in a deeper way, offering a biblical understanding of what God is saying to us through the world He has created.
Seth has a poetic style of writing that glides along, effortlessly explaining and unfolding the logic and theology, highlighting the beauty of the created world and the reason why we inherently relate to it. He describes the created world as God's language, His equivalent to words, written for us like beautiful prose or perfect poetry.
He weaves in Scripture to highlight that God's words, Scripture, and nature share a common language.
Seth has a lovely use of language, his words paint pictures of the beauty of creation, showing us why we are inspired by all that God has created for us to enjoy. The language of creation speaks loudly to us, telling us how much God wants us to be in relationship with Him. That is the purpose. So that we will draw near, lean in and embrace. So that we will know Him close.
One section of the book offers a chapter on each of the seven days of the Genesis creation account, which could also work well to be read as a daily devotional or even a study series for a home group or discussion group.

“Delightful”

If you are a lover of nature in any sense, you will be encouraged and inspired by this book which all point us to how nature speaks of the glories of God.

Laced with his personal experience and scripture. It’s a rich, yet easy read - particularly as the chapters are self contained, so you can pick it up and put it down whenever you wish without losing the flow… a gift to this tired mum!

I particularly loved how he used what we see in nature as parallels for the Christian walk, and how he encourages us to marvel at nature, ultimately pointing us back to the wonder of it’s source - God himself. I've always had a particular love for green spaces, often feeling like I need to be in them, and this book was so encouraging as it makes complete sense that we would crave spaces that God so vividly speaks through. ❤️

All in all, this delightful book helps us to uncover, interpret and respond to how God wonderfully communicates with us through the gift of His natural world.

Thank you for generously providing this book in exchange for my honest thoughts.

“Beautiful”

Loved the way the author shows us that, with eyes to see, the whole of creation reveals aspects of God’s amazing character. But he doesn’t just root that in his own feeling but explains how the Bible ‘translates’ the language of nature so that we might better know God.

I have recommended it to friends I know who wonder at the universe and who are open to there being a Creator behind creation, and the One who came to show us Who He really is!
