We want our kids to see that the Old Testament points to Christ. In her marvelous Jesus Moments series, Alison Mitchell helps children seek-and-find the Old Testament connection to Jesus in fun ways they'll be sure to remember!
What a clever series! By using symbols that children must find and explore, these books draw out significant links between Old Testament characters and Jesus. Perfect for parents and teachers who want to help their children understand Godâs Big Story.
Jesus showed his followers in all the Old Testament âthe things concerning himselfâ (Luke 24:27). The Old Testament comes into clear focus when we begin to see these wonderful things. Alison Mitchell draws children into this rich true way of reading the Old Testament. The books are fresh, lively, attractive, intriguing, and thought-provoking. Warmly recommended.
This is an abridged version of my review, which is available at: https://www.lifeisstory.com/childrens-books/jesus-moments-ruth-finding-jesus-in-the-story-of-ruth-alison-mitchell-and-noah-warnes/
In this vibrantly colorful picture book, author Alison Mitchell shares the story of Ruth with children, retelling the biblical narrative and highlighting ways that Ruth's story foreshadows the gospel. She encourages kids to keep an eye out for oil lamps in the illustrations, because each one signals a gospel parallel on that page. Kids will enjoy this seek-and-find element, and the answers appear in the back, where Mitchell also unpacks the significance of each "Jesus moment."
The illustrations are eye-catching and add a lot to the story. I especially like how Noah Warnes used lighting in different scenes to set the mood, and you can almost feel the sun beating down on Ruth as she gleans from the harvest.
This story jumps straight into the action, with Ruth gleaning barley in Boaz's field. The author provides a little bit of backstory as Boaz speaks to a field hand. Later, Ruth makes the connection with Boaz about him being the kinsman redeemer for Naomi's family. The story concludes with the happy ending of Ruth's marriage to Boaz and the birth of Obed, whose family line would lead to King David and Jesus.
This is a great book for families and church leaders who want to help kids arrive at a deeper understanding of Ruth's story. However, if someone is introducing a child to this story for the first time, they should know that the iconic moment between Ruth and Naomi before they travel back to Bethlehem does not appear in this Jesus Moments retelling. But unlike some other Ruth storybooks, this one explains the kinsman redeemer tradition and how it points towards Jesus. That unique focus makes this book stand out, and it is another great addition to the series.
I received a complimentary ebook from the publisher, and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
This isn't our first book of this series-- we've read Jonah and Esther's stories, and it won't be our last! This is a great series that tells stories from the Bible, helping kids recognize the 'Jesus Moments'-- times where people are or are not like Jesus.
The whole Bible is the story of God and his redemptive plan for rescuing a sinful people through Christ so it's great to have these books to help kids start to pick our for themselves as they read Scripture- how does this story point to Jesus?
Will definitely look forward to more like this!
We absolutely love the Jesus Moments series, and this one on Ruth is another fantastic addition. One of our favorite parts is the interactive element...searching for the hidden symbols throughout the story keeps kids engaged and excited to read.
I also really appreciate the deeper message. It does such a beautiful job of showing how the story of Ruth points to Jesus, helping kids start to understand those bigger biblical connections in an age-appropriate way. Itâs especially encouraging for young girls, highlighting themes of faithfulness, loyalty, and Godâs bigger plan.
This is such a meaningful and interactive way to explore Bible stories as a family.
*I received a review copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
This Jesus Moments picture books series helps children discover the connections between beloved stories of the Old Testament and the promise of Jesus. Each book in the series is a faithful narrative of the true story from the Bible and engages kids through vibrant illustrations. Written by Alison Mitchell, the same author of many of the âTales that Tell the Truth Series, these books will be a fast favorite in your home. This newest release of Ruthâs story encourages observation and careful listening, helping children see when something in this story of friendship, loyalty, and redemption is a bit like our Saviour Jesus.
Written with ages 4-7 in mind, this helps even those little listeners see how the story of Ruth & Boaz in the Old Testament points ahead to the promise of Jesus.
Every book in this series has been such a joy to bring into our home and open up with my children. Having to carefully look at the picture to spot the signpost symbols encourages lingering long over books and leads to really special reading times as a family. I also love that at an early age, kids are given the tools and encouraged to practice seeing Jesus in all of Scripture. The first pages are spent focused on the story found in the book of Ruth, but the last few pages take time to expound upon four ways the story of Ruth points to the Savior. Ending with a note to parents, and the source Biblical references, this interactive resource is a wonderful addition to any family library.
Thank you to the goodbookcompanyusa for a complimentary book in exchange for an honest review. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
I just finished reading "Jesus Moments: Ruth" đž by Alison Mitchell with my little one, and it is such a beautiful addition to our bookshelf! Itâs the fifth books in the âJesus Momentsâ series and continues to do an excellent job of connecting Old Testament stories to Jesus!
If youâre looking for a way to show your kids how the whole Bible points to one big story, this series is a must-have. Hereâs why we loved it:
â¨Connections that Click: It doesnât just tell the story of Ruth and Boaz; it connects the dots to show how Boaz, as a "Kinsman-Redeemer," points us directly to Jesus.
â¨Stunning Art: The illustrations by Noah Warnes are vibrant and warmâperfect for keeping little eyes engaged while you read.
â¨Big Truths, Simple Words: It handles themes of loyalty, providence, and redemption in a way that is easy for children to grasp without losing the depth of the Gospel.
⨠Fun & Interactive: kids have to find the lamp throughout the book to help them identify âJesus Momentsâ.
Whether you're teaching about kindness or explaining Godâs bigger plan, this book makes those "Jesus Moments" so clear. Highly recommend for your next family devotional or bedtime story!
This series reveals how Jesus is in every story of the Bible! Ruth is about Jesus: âThere are moments when someone or something in the story is a little bit like Jesus.â This interactive story has your little ones looking for hidden oil lamps throughout the book. When you see an oil lamp, youâll know that youâve found a Jesus moment. Flip to the back of the book to compare the moments side-by-side.
This retelling drops you right in Boazâs fields as Ruth crouches, scoops and shuffles across the field. I found this to be an accurate and edifying retelling that beautifully captures every moment of the book of Ruth. It takes you all the way to her crouching, scooping, and hearing a giggle as she plays with her baby boy Obed! This story of a kinsman-redeemer points to the greatest Redeemer, Rescuer, King⌠Jesus.
Ruth and Boaz exemplify an honorable love story, and I like how this book teaches kids that they too can be a part of a great love story⌠if they follow Jesus. And it encourages them to thank Jesus now for loving them.
Sometimes itâs hard for kids to understand and enjoy Old Testament stories, and I appreciate how this series connects all the stories from the Bible while making it comprehensible for young ones.
If youâve never read a Jesus Moments story, this would be a great one to start with! It is very well done and enjoyable to read aloud!
*I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
My second grade daughter LOVES this series! She was elated to receive the Old Testament story of Ruth.
We love the interactive aspect of this story! My daughter enjoyed finding the hidden illustrations that later reveal how the sacrificial, redemptive love story of Ruth and Boaz connects to life and lineage of Jesus, our one true Redeemer, in a unique and age-appropriate way.
This book was easy for her to read, well written and Biblically accurate. The illustrations are vibrant, eye-catching and depict Ruth and Boazâs story as well as the connections to the New Testament and Jesusâ life and death. Most of all, I love that the book gently points young readers to the salvation story in a way thatâs easy for them to grasp.
This book would make a wonderful gift, home or homeschool library addition as well as a great resource for childrenâs church or Sunday school libraries!
* I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. All thoughts are my own and I was not required to write a positive review.
In Jesus Moments: Ruth, Alison Mitchell helps your kids discover the Savior in the story of Ruth. With lush illustrations by Noah Warnes, this book is a beautiful way to experience this beautiful story.
What makes this book stand out are the âJesus Moments.â These are moments in the story, signaled by hidden oil lamps in the pictures, that point to our Savior. I love that this book allows your kids to discover them for themselves while also explaining them clearly.
Scripture Points to Jesus
Some of these moments show that Boaz wasnât perfect, but he was a good man who loved God. Jesus, however, was perfect. He obeyed Godâs commands perfectly. Ruth had a baby born in Bethlehem who would point us to the great King David. Mary had a baby born in Bethlehemâthe greatest King, Jesus.
This book is a meaningful resource for helping children see how all of Scripture points to Jesus.
I received a media copy of Jesus Moments: Ruth and this is my honest review. @diveindigdeep
Another wonderful addition to this great series! With oil lamps hidden throughout the illustrations, this book retells the story of Ruth and shows how it points to the gospel.
This picture book is part of a larger series that we have really enjoyed reading together. My kids especially love searching for the âJesus Momentsâ by finding the hidden pictures.
At the end of the book, there is a short recap highlighting the ways the story points to Jesus. Itâs a helpful reminder that the Old Testament points us to Jesus and itâs a blessing not only for children, but for adults as well.
I also appreciated the last page that explains why to look for " Jesus Moments" and has Scripture to read further.
Jesus Moments: Ruth: Finding Jesus in the Story of Ruth by Alison Mitchell is a beautifully crafted and theologically rich childrenâs book that I am so grateful to have added to our home library.
This book helps children ages 4â7 understand something deeply important: the whole Bible points to Jesus. Through the story of Ruth and Boaz, young readers are gently shown how moments in the Old Testament reflect and foreshadow Christ as our ultimate Kinsman Redeemer. The interactive symbols that highlight these âJesus Momentsâ make the learning process engaging and memorable, helping children connect the Old and New Testaments in a meaningful way.
The illustrations are lovely and inviting, perfectly suited for little ones while still holding the attention of older children within the age range. The writing is clear, faithful to Scripture, and accessible without oversimplifying important truths. It communicates Godâs faithfulness in a way that feels both understandable and profound.
What I especially appreciated is how naturally the gospel thread is woven throughout the story. It doesnât feel forcedâit feels true. The message of redemption, faithfulness, and Godâs sovereign care shines clearly from beginning to end.
I am thrilled to own a copy to reread with my grandchildren, and I highly recommend it for Christian families, homeschool settings, and childrenâs ministry.
I received a complimentary copy and was under no obligation to leave a positive review.
