In our culture there is no such thing as impossible. We're told that as long as you put your mind to it, you can do anything! So we instinctively look to ourselves for the power to obey God's commands.

We know we are supposed to obey God. We think that if we aren't able to do it there is something wrong with us. So we all pretend we are doing it, when deep down we know we aren’t!

Author Jonty Allcock calls this 'the madness of our lives' and 'the slavery of the impossible'. He shows us that embracing the impossibility of our own obedience leads not to despair, but to true freedom as we look to the God who can do all things:

“With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.” (Mark 10:27)

This book takes us through four steps that will help us look to ourselves less and depend on God more, enabling spirit-led joyful obedience.

Jonty Allcock is one of the most engaging gospel communicators in the UK today. He combines exegetical faithfulness with creativity and relevant practical application. In his latest book, he shows Christians that God’s power enables us to live a life of joyful obedience. This uplifting and challenging book will liberate believers from the despair and frustration of feeling that God asks us to do the impossible. Whilst God does give us humanly “impossible” commands, the glorious good news is that he makes it possible for us to obey them! If you want your life to be transformed from crushing and dutiful legalism to heartfelt longing to obey then read this book.

Here is an encouraging and digestible book about obedience! Grounded in Bible truth, these chapters give not just an argument but a call that's clear and full of hope. The biblical path to obedience is plainly laid out, with the necessary first step: "I can't." But what a blessing to consider the subsequent steps that in fact lead us to obey: "I'm sorry"; "Please help"; and "Let's Go." I'm grateful for this call to follow the Lord Jesus with joyful obedience.

I am delighted to commend “Impossible Commands”. Writing with the same thrilling clarity as in his preaching, Jonty offers us a fresh and exciting perspective upon the apparently impossible commands of God, giving us real hope of experiencing the joy of obedience that Christians long for. I thoroughly recommend this book!”

Independent reviews

Jonty has written an absolutely phenomenal book about the beauty of the impossible commands in Scripture

Alistair Chalmers, Chalmers

To illustrate how great this book is I’ll let you into a little secret; I never ‘dog ear’ my books. I like them to be in good condition and look nice. But this book is filled with such good content that I had no choice. I’ve highlighted, I’ve dog eared the pages and I even bent the spine!... continue reading
