Starting over is hard! But it’s a lesson nine-year-old Abigail is learning as she begins fourth grade at her new school. She’s also going to learn about grace—the kind we extend to others and the grace God offers his children. Fun, relatable, grounded in Scripture, and full of bold illustrations, Abigail and the Big Start Over by Bethany McIlrath is a story kids will love.

Caroline Saunders

Author, The Story of Water and The Story of Home

While plenty of books for kids this age have ‘good guys’ and ‘bad guys,’ Bethany McIlrath has crafted real-world characters in real-life settings who exhibit both vice and virtue and desperately need God’s grace for a fresh start. Honestly, that was my favorite trait of this book—how all the characters demonstrate their need for grace, from Abigail to her new friend Flora, to their irritating classmate Greg, to Abigail’s mom. This engaging book will help kids honor others, seek to understand others, extend grace to others, and grow in grace themselves.

Author of the Training Young Hearts Series and Held

Delightful. Relatable. Entertaining. Accessible. True. Meeting Abigail in these pages felt like discovering a friend for the fifth-grade ‘new girl’ inside of me, who was desperately lonely and felt like she was blowing it at every turn. I am so eager to introduce Abigail and the Big Start Over to all of my elementary-aged friends so that they too can adventure with her, identify with her, and discover the incredibly beautiful and immensely applicable power of the gospel in their own very real lives, right alongside her. These stories about Abigail will doubtless impact the stories of their readers in a powerful way.

“My 8 year old LOVED IT!”

My daughter read books 1 and 2 we are getting her the rest soon. I haven’t read myself but my daughter loved them! She even gifted her gently used book #1 to a friend that she knew would be blessed by it. They are currently starting at a new school this coming fall and my girl knew that Abigail and the Big Start Over: Switch Schools. Make Friends. Fix All the Mess! would be perfect for her. I’m so glad there are books like this available and interesting enough for kiddos to enjoy.

We're so glad to hear that your daughter is enjoying this series and able to encourage a friend! Thanks so much for sharing, Evie!

“Fantastic read for young and old girls”

These series we read together. My 9 year old daughter and 40 year old me. It helps me to heal my inner child and gives knowledge and confidence in Christ for my daughter. I wish there was series for boys as well, as my son would definitely benefit of a read like this. But I’m very sure, when he reaches the age, he will read these books with gladness as well. Well done to the author!

We're so glad that you and your daughter are able to enjoy these books together, Olga! Thank you so much for sharing your review.

“Love this series!”

(Review written for 'Abigail Series set')

I can’t think of any child or adult who hasn’t ever felt left out. God created us for community and fellowship and when that doesn’t happen, something is wrong. In this very relatable story, Abigail’s friends start practicing for a musical performance, but Abigail can’t sing or dance. She begins to feel self-conscious and the doubts start. Struggling to find her place amongst her friends, she battles with insecurity of fitting in where she’s always felt comfortable before. With the help of her mom, her Sunday School teacher, and the truth of Scripture using Psalm 139, Abigail learns how God made her just the way she is and that even though sin affects our friendships, Jesus brings restoration and redemption to all areas of our lives. Abigail also discovers that there’s a place for her in the musical, too.

The Abigail series by @bethanymcilrath has quickly found its place in our hearts and a permanent spot on my Abigail’s bookshelf. She loves that the character has the same name and is the same age (well technically our Abby turned 10 now 😭) and is a Christian - just like her! As a mom, I am thrilled to see this series growing as it takes common circumstances amongst kids, like fitting in, and anchoring it in the truth of Scripture. My Abigail feels like reading these books is like reading about a friend she knows and can relate to. What could be better than that?

“Faith building for 9 year olds”

This book looks fun for upper primary age. The spellings are American English, but that is quite popular this side of the pond. Biblical focus is great for getting to know Jesus better. Jesus said let the children come to me...

“Helpful books”

(Review written for 'Abigail Series set')

The tween years of life can hold various challenges for our little ones and this series speaks into these issues in a Christ centred way.

Whilst they are very narrative driven, rather than beautifully descriptive, they very much serve their purpose of helping children see, through story, how the Bible applies to the struggles they may be facing. That is, the encouragement or solutions for these kinds of struggles are based on what scripture says, rather than pop culture phrases which our children will inevitably hear often, helping them to combat these other messages with truth which will truly bring life.

I would definitely recommend books from this series if your child is struggling with one of the issues focused on.

However, I must be honest and say that my son “couldn't get into them” and neither could his friend who we loaned them to so I don't know what children would think of them. This is my perspective as a mother!

“So relatable (and not just for kids)”

(Review written for 'Abigail Series set')

I don't read many children's books these days, but I will always love them. Especially when they feature fun-loving, relatable characters like Abigail.

In "Abigail Gets Left Out," Bethany McIlrath poignantly captures the heart and experiences of a fourth-grade girl who suddenly feels like she doesn’t belong where she had always felt welcome before. When her best friend teams up with some other girls for a musical performance, Abigail’s lack of skill brings an onslaught of insecurity, and not just when it comes to her dancing ability.

Abigail’s mom and Sunday School teacher help her understand that Jesus made her just the way she is, and that he can help her to be a good friend even when she feels left out.

This book is for kids, but if you’re a mom, grandma or auntie who’s ever felt like you didn’t fit in—at any age or for any reason—it will touch your heart too.

“Great, Relatable Story”

(Review written for 'Abigail Series set')

When my brother saw this book lying on my floor, he said, "Abigail Gets Left Out. So, is that an autobiography?" I laughed and said that it is not, but that the story was VERY relatable to me, both from my childhood and from current events. Then I told him that this novel does contain words I've written, because a quote from my review of book one appears on the endorsements page! This is a brand new experience for me, and I am very excited about it.

This is the third book in the Abigail series, and it builds on existing situations and character relationships while also being a great entry point for people who haven't read the other books. The author does a great job of introducing previous events to new readers without it seeming like an obvious rehash, and the book jumps into a new story about Abigail dealing with friendship challenges and differing interests with girls at school and church.

The story is incredibly realistic about the challenging dynamics that Abigail is dealing with, as well as her feelings about them. The Christian messages also feel very natural within the story, as Abigail learns about friendship with Jesus and how Jesus can help people become better friends to each other. The resolution at the end of the story feels convincing, and this book has lots of great messages for girls who are in similar situations. Also, just like with other books in the series, this one has great illustrations, a website link for activities from the book, and book club discussion questions.

“Abigail Gets Left Out” is a wonderful book for elementary-aged girls, and for older readers who enjoy children's books. The story includes both serious elements and fun, humorous moments, and this book is great for both independent reading and for family read-aloud times. I highly recommend the whole Abigail series, and am looking forward to future installments.

I received a free copy from the publisher, and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

“A fun new book in the series!”

(Review written for 'Abigail Series set')

Read-aloud with 5yo girl.

Readers who have enjoyed the first few books in the Abigail series from @thegoodbook will enjoy rejoining their literary friend in her newest adventure! Known for being imaginative & creative, Abigail is a lovable young girl navigating the various challenges of growing up. Whether she’s figuring out what it means to be a good friend, or what it truly means that Jesus is THE BEST friend of all, Abigail's journey to the truth is full of relatable experiences and applicable lessons for readers.

In this third book of the series, Abigail learns that we human are made for relationships but sin affects our friendships. In studying John 15 alongside her parents and trusted mentors, Abigail learns that the Gospel of God’s love and Jesus’ perfection brings restoration and freedom to our relationships - both with our Heavenly Father and earthly friendships.

Something I especially love about the series is the emphasis on Scripture and discipleship. I also love that simply & profound truths are communicated in story form that allow young readers to really connect.
Thank you to The Good Book Company for the complimentary book in exchange for an honest review. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
