“My Lent devotion of choice this year!”
(Review written for 'The Risen King (ebook)')
This year’s new Lent devotional book offering from the Good Book Company is something extra special! J.A. Medders has brought his extensive knowledge and research into Charles Haddon Spurgeon’s great body of work together to compile a Lent devotional: “The Risen King.”
As the editor himself points out, the beauty of Spurgeon’s preaching lies in how he made known the glory of Christ, as he exalted our great God and Saviour. This certainly comes across in the sermon excerpts, they are joyfully Christocentric and worshipful.
In “The Risen King” there are forty short devotionals consisting of a brief Bible passage, a devotional excerpt from one of Spurgeon’s sermons, followed by a helpful reflection and prayer added by J.A. Medders. The editor has also helpfully updated some of the Victorian language into modern English where needed, this makes for an enjoyable reading experience.
I particularly love how Christ-focused this devotional is, it is as if the reader is unable to take their eyes off the Saviour, whilst Spurgeon’s adoration and worship of Christ is akin to reading the Psalms, as it lifts the heart in worship towards the Lord Jesus Christ.
Those who have enjoyed Spurgeon’s “Morning and Evening” devotional will also enjoy the similarity of “The Risen King,” as the editor was inspired by the former in his compiling of this Lent devotional.
In closing, “The Risen King” is a everything that one would expect from C.H. Spurgeon: Christ-centred, spiritually rich and pastorally warm. This will certainly be my Lent devotional of choice this year, and I commend it to you as a book that will bring your heart closer to the Saviour this Easter.
