You believe in the love of Christ, but does love for one another shape your church’s current culture—or the culture your church hopes to build?
Coming alongside you as a fellow church member and a biblical counsellor, Helen Thorne-Allenson offers practical, realistic insight into contributing to a church culture of care.
You’ll consider…
Reflection questions at the end of each chapter will help you practise the principles shared.
However far along your church is in cultivating a caring community, you’ll find clarifying questions, fresh ideas and biblical wisdom in A Church That Cares.
This is a practical and honest book. On the face of it there seems to be no new information but it clearly throws a spotlight on the functional way of what being part of the local body of Christ means in everyday language. It is very easy in the course of daily living to gloss over these basic essentials for maintaining the health of the the local fellowship. From time to time it is necessary, helpful and encouraging to review how we are all called to live in Christ's community. The book is readable and clear, and easy to grasp. ...Thank you Helen Thorne -Allinson
Our church is starting a mentorship program this fall, and one of the ways we’re helping women prepare is by walking through why Christian community is important, what it looks like, and how they can actively be part of it.
A Church That Cares by Helen Thorne-Allenson has been the perfect resource for accomplishing all of the above. I originally picked up this book as part of a book review program, but I now plan to use it with our women on Wednesday nights. Here’s why:
The chapters are short, concise, and easy to read and understand (about 15–20 minutes ...each).
It clearly explains the topic while also giving tangible, relatable examples. I especially loved the different church member examples in Chapter 3 — I saw myself in a few of them.
Scripture is the backbone of the book. Ephesians, especially Chapter 4, is referenced throughout, and the author gives practical guidance on using the book of Ephesians to equip your congregation to care for one another.
The book is written for both church members and church leaders. A few chapters focus more on planning and execution for ministry leaders or administrators, but the average church member will still gain so much from it.
It includes discussion questions and practical outlines for establishing a “church that cares” ministry or program.
It gives an extremely practical breakdown of why people are the way they are and how we can better love and meet them where they are.
I’m excited to go through this book with our women, and I highly recommend it if you’re looking for tools to help your church grow in intentional community, communication, and caring for others well.
Thank you to the publisher and author for my gifted copy. All my opinions are my own.
This was a great book that gave practical applications for the church. I love how the author listed all the "One Another's in the book. There were some sections I felt that were more written towards pastors, but church members could still glean some wisdom. It was a quick read, but full of wonderful information.
