The letter of 1 Peter is a broad-brush sketch of the Christian life from beginning to end.

Description

The letter of 1 Peter is a broad-brush sketch of the Christian life from beginning to end. Peter begins by assuring his listeners of their beginnings (as re-born ones) and concludes by appealing to them to 'stand firm' (because the end is near). Between their beginning and the end he appeals to them to behave in a Christ like way and not to fear their enemies.

This is indeed a beautifully written and spiritually powerful letter that will bring great rewards to those who study it carefully.

a helpful addition

i found the "reflection" sections helpful in beginning to think through application of the material.
barnett helps us to see the structure of the text by the way in which he sets it out - a strength of the book.
some readers will yearn for more detail but the flow of the test comes across well, making 1 Peter a coherent whole.

some further exegetical work on Ch 3v18-22 would have been helpful in order to justify the author's position on "the spirits in prison" - no doubt the length of the book precluded this, at just 140 pages of less than dense text.

all in all, this is a great book to read through in order to gain an appreciation for the book as a whole. preachers would benefit from it as an introductory text, and it is also easily accessible for "lay" christians.
