Each window in the Advent Calendar opens to reveal a rich, full colour picture, and a Bible verse. These pictures and verses will help you to meet different people from Jesus' family tree. The window can also be torn off, ready to hang on a special kind of tree called a Jesse tree.

The accompanying book helps families to read two or three verses from the Bible each day, discuss some simple questions and then pray together.

Each daily Bible time takes about five minutes, maybe at breakfast, or after an evening meal. Whatever suits you best.

A Jesse tree is a traditional way of celebrating Advent. Each day, a symbol is hung on the tree as a reminder of part of Jesus' family tree. You will find these symbols hiding behind the windows on your Advent calendar.

You will meet three kinds of people on your Jesse tree:
- Members of Jesus' family (starting with Adam)
- Old Testament prophets who spoke about Jesus hundreds of years before He was born
- People who met Jesus during the first Christmas

You will find suggestions for a variety of ways to make a Jesse tree inside the accompanying booklet.

Fantastic Family Advent Calendar
Review by Roger Fawcett | 16.01.2008

This is a very hands on and interactive family activity pack for advent. We especially enjoyed having the 'Jesse Tree' to look at every day and to add things to. The inclusion of posters and other things to do kept each day varied.

There were lots of good doctrinal points covered (e.g. Jesus coming to save, or Jesus coming as Davidic King)in an engaging way. The reason was that, in dealing with a family tree, the teaching focussed on people. We have children of a variety of ages, all of whom enjoyed it. The best one yet!

Really Good Idea
Review by Wendy Collishaw | 11.01.2008

This ticks nearly all the boxes for a great alternative to the usual Advent Calendars.

I loved the way you could use the 'door's to make a special tree as a reminder of what has been learnt. I loved the booklet which helped explain the whole big picture of Christmas. Especially liked the bible verse on the calendar.

Very good to get into the habit of opening the Bible as a family at a very busy time of year when the important gets lost in the urgent!

To make this even better it would be great if it could 'stand up' or be hung to make it easier to have in a prominent place. I have to say that my children still love the chocolate type and therefore had two calendars! Not necessarily a bad thing.

Maybe it could be a little more 'sparkly' & glossy, the colours brighter too.

Great
Review by Lesley Ashworth | 10.01.2008

We really enjoyed using this as a family. Interesting information and things to do , just the right length and lovely to see the Jesse tree developing as we added the pictures each day. Thoroughly recommended.

aat last a meaningful Advent calendar for 21st cent.Christians
Review by John Rutter | 08.01.2008

Above all, this calendar makes sense of the Bible's story of creation, Fall and

Redemption - for children. God's sure promises are clear. My 10 yr.old twins loved opening the windows, hole-punching and hanging the pics. on a live branch (our mini-Jesse tree). They (and a grown-up) said 'this connects the OT with the NT story about Jesus, in a way I hadn't understood before.'

Each day's blurb is a bit long for busy pre-Christmas families (at least ours) but the quality was proved when they caught up with lost days. And so we made it to the 25th,when Jesus' crown topped the 'branch of Jesse' on the picture.

A great experience for churched 10yr.olds ... and I think younger and less churched would manage too.

very accessible for whole family
Review by Kathryn Jones | 05.01.2008

Excellent material, both children aged 4 and 9 enjoyed it and learnt loads. probably required a bit of background general Bible knowledge in order to fully appreciate.

We also adapted it for our christmas family service it worked really well, gave overview of Jesus family for non christians attending the carol service.

What Advent Calendars ought to be about!
Review by Chris Hammersley | 04.01.2008

It is such a fantastic return to truly counting down to Christmas. What the original advent was- and a great way to discuss this with kids too.

Good overview of the bible
Review by Anonymous | 04.01.2008

Children really enjoyed finding the references each day and seeing how the bible fitted together. They had a good overview of the bible after completing their Jesse tree

Quite simply, excellent.
Review by Alison Cripps | 04.01.2008

We used "The Real Christmas Tree" as our family breakfast time devotions for Advent. Our youngest son is nearly 8 and he couldn't wait each day to see what was the next part of the story. Very clear presentation of salvation history, and the promises of God in the OT being fulfilled in Jesus, that an 8 year old can easily grasp. We also loved putting together the poster, and hanging all the windows on a twiggy branch cut from the garden! A lovely creative touch which served to reinforce the essential teaching.

We use "Table Talk" on a daily basis in the mornings (and XTB at bedtime), and this Christmas booklet made Advent extra special for all of us. Thank you.

Really good way to get the family together around the Bible
Review by David Stanford | 03.01.2008

We've used these for about 3 years with our kids (now 6 and 7). The little studies don't require any parent preparation, except a read through to make sure you don't need any pens and paper or similar. Because it is an advent calandar the kids are generally keen to do it, even though there is no chocolate! (Ours thankfully seem to enjoy opening the windows!) Really worthwhile way for them to get a biblical view of Christmas.

Great for older children but needs lots of explanation
Review by Christian Fielder | 02.01.2008

We decided to buy this Advent calendar this year to ring the changes with previous ones bought from the GBC.

We really liked the idea of tracing God's promise of a future king with a different story each day. However we think that this one was too complicated for children less than 5 or 6 and a lot of the pictures caused confusion. So we had a lot of explaining to do. Would be great for older children I am sure.

An excellent way to lead the family into Christmas
Review by Ruth Jones | 01.01.2008

My children (aged 7 and 9) and myself have enjoyed the Real Christmas Tree Advent Calendar. It took us on an adventure to find out who would be the real king, promised in the Bible. The bible readings were short enough for the kids to read out, the activities fun and hilarious at times, and the prayer ideas pertinent. We spent about 15mins before breakfast on it, with no moans or winges! (We have done the other calendars in the past and are pleased with the original and different ideas you come up with each year)

Well received
Review by Anonymous | 31.12.2007

My daughter in law was delighted that the advent calender covered the biblical history of the Christmas story. The small booklet to use with each day's calendar opening was child centred and really interested my grandchildren. Congratulations on a product well thought out and presented. We found using the web to order very efficient and we were even able to have the advent calendar posted to Holland!

Brilliant Advent Calendar
Review by Anonymous | 27.12.2007

This is a great way of looking at advent in a new way. I really enjoyed doing this and so did my son who is 6 1/2. It really helped to keep the focus on Jesus for Christmas. I definitely recommend this for an advent calendar.

Bought as a Christmas alternative (instead of chocolate!) for my grandchildren. They enjoyed reading it together with Mum and Dad and I would definitely buy another

Very useful, clear, exciting gospel tool
Review by Alison Law | 27.12.2007

My children aged 9 and 7 loved the advent calendar and reading the scripture verses. We snuggled up at night on my bed to do the bible study and they enjoyed the activities and reading from the Bible.

My only regret is that we fell behind as we got caught up with late nights out; then my children fell ill. So now, after Christmas Day, my son is asking to catch up, so we will still finish it and of course it is still relevant.

A wonderful tool to remind children about God's promises and sending Jesus to the world and not about 'gimme gimme presents'. We will definitely do another one next year.

excelent calendar to focus family on Christ during advent
Review by Sandy Austrin-Miner | 24.12.2007

the whole family has enjoyed this calendar. Each day there is a bible passage to read and discuss focusing on people in the lineage of Christ and the promises made to Abraham and his descendents. We have found it a good way to focus on Christ and his salvation as Christmas is approached. My children are aged from 7-14 years and have all looked forward to opening each window.
