The Daily Reading Bible - Volume 1
|

This summer I completed my Bible through the year scheme and was searching for something different before starting it again. I was also puzzling how to avoid my regular quiet times slipping as they usually do during holiday times when the kids are off school. Seeing this book I thought it might be the solution. It was! I loved it and found it so refreshing that I have continued using the series. After more intensive study for several years I have loved the change in pace and the opportunity to reflect on a shorter passage for a longer period of time.

This is a very good booklet to give substance and framework to a daily quiet time, without too many additonal comments which can distract from the text. Comments and questions are generally good (sometimes they can appear obscure, but that is a chance to ponder harder!). We have also used it for studies in a work based Christian Union, where it has been helpful.

Finding a good bible study guide is both very personal and can be difficult. I am not one for the "blessd thought" type guide nor for those which take you from Dan to Beersheba in under a week.
I do however like the Daily Reading Bible, therefore it must be good! In simple format it contains the ESV text for the passage under consideration. In volume one Matthew 5-6 and 1 Corinthians 1-4 are dealt with a few verses at a time whilst Joshua works out at a chapter a day. After the reading there are 2 or 3 questions to answer similar in style to Alan Stibbs' "Search the Scriptures" from a few years back. The book does not claim to be a substitute for in depth study and the questions could be answered in seconds or in minutes depending on how deep you want to go. Built into the daily reading programme is a "point to ponder" which teaches the reader to meditate. Also a "prayer idea" based on the passage which teaches the reader to pray using scripture as a guiide. Surely those two elements themselves are vital for growing Christians in our modern fast paced world.
My one criticism of the book is that there are 60 readings yet the book comes out quarterly. This is done deliberatley to allow for missed days. However for it to be a truly daily bible reading bible, could we have an extra 30 days readings please?

the Daily Reading Bible is very handy as you can take it anywhere. I have found the way it is organsied helpful as it makes you think more deeply about the passages you read and apply them to your own life.

This compact book is a brilliant way to help one read the bible everyday. It contains to bible passages in it, which allows one to make notes and scribble all over the passage. It also has questions after the readings to help one unlock the meaning of the passage. It ends with ponder points and prayer ideas to keep one thinking and praying all day. All in all a great resource!
