We all know what it is to feel discontented with our lives — with what we have, how much we can get, what we do, who we live with, how we are and what the future promises.

The constant hunger for something more may seem like the aches and pains of growing old — something that we must just put up with in this far-from-perfect world. But the Bible shows that discontent is the symptom of a lethal disease that will kill us if we do not find a cure. It was discontent that first led humans into rebellion against God, with the catastrophic consequences that have followed from that decision.

Yet Jesus Christ promises that anyone who believes in Him will never again hunger or thirst. The apostle Paul was able to say that he had learned the secret of being content in any and every situation — in need or in plenty. Discontent is a problem of our hearts not our circumstances. This Good Book Guide can help us to understand why we become discontented, how Jesus Christ alone can help us, and on a practical level, how Christian living can bring the treasure of contentment to our daily lives.

Definitely recommend

We studied this book as a group of women who were mostly mums at home. It was so helpful in it's relevance and direct challenge to a lot of things we face in our lives. I loved the amount of Biblical content, and that it worked so hard to apply what we were learning. We found that a lot of times there was too much to pack into our time, but if we had the luxury of more time we would have loved to cover the material with more thorough discussion. I think the first few and last few studies were brilliant and a couple in the middle we found a little harder work, but they were still very helpful. I really recommend it all around.

Relevant, accessible and thought provoking
Review by Nancy Hands | 22.01.2010

We have only studied the first one so far in our group of 7. Everybody contributed to the discussion, finding it remarkably contemporary. Leader's notes at the book were excellent. Some questions were a little obvious, so were omitted, but otherwise it was well received and we look forward to the next session.

Superb, thought provoking, vital topic
Review by Stephen Williams | 18.10.2009

At half way through our group is showing more enthusiasm for these studies than any they've done before. Starting with Ecclesiastes (I'd not read it before) gave us a thirst to understand more and a fresh view on well known passages ... and we've only just discovered that there are answers at the back!!

A great resource for housegroup study relevant to the 21st century
Review by Debbie Keown | 06.07.2009

I have used this book with a housegroup of 8 women. We have really enjoyed the content and the way it challenges us to question what makes us content. The material is quite "meaty" and I would recommend that the Explore More sections are looked at at home. Having the leader's notes in the back has been a great help in steering the group to the "right" answer. It's also meant that we have been able to take turns in leading as everything you need for the session is in the book. We've also enjoyed focussing on one book of the bible each week and have found it's introduced us to passages not studied before.

This is a great book, appropraite to the culture we're living in and all the challenges that 21st living brings with it.

Great studies - relevant for all
Review by Rebecca | 26.03.2009

This is a good set of Bible studies looking at how we can be content because of our faith. I am studying them with a young person in a one-to-one setting and we are both enjoying them.

Beforehand I was worried about chapter 4 which looks at being content with where we are (1 Corinthians 7 v 1-24). I thought the whole discussion from 1 Corinthians 7 may be not appropriate, but the questions were worded in such a way that we quickly moved off the issue of the passage and into application in our lives.

The reason I have given it 3.5 is that at times it can be hard to work out what the questions are really asking. A sneaky glance at the leader's guide usually helps!

A timely study for all Christians
Review by Francine Loose | 02.01.2009

This "good book" guide is very comprehensive in dealing with the subject of Biblical contentment, whatever our circumstances or situation. It looks at the subject of contentment under 6 main headings:

1. our hungry hearts--searching for meaning

2. the only food that satisfies--pointing the reader to Jesus

3. being content with what we have

4. being content with where we are

5. being content when life is hard

6. the secret of true happiness--how we can be truly happy/blessed in Christ

The notes are the right length for the time alloted and are an appropiate length for the Scripture passage being studied. There is an optional extra in the "explore more" for those with more time or who want to study further after the group study is over. Useful notes and helps are to be found in the back for the group leader.

This study guide is particularly relevant as the country and indeed the world is thrown into financial chaos and so many are fearful for the future. In a world full of discontent, this study helps guide the Christian to a Biblical position of contentment and enables us to say with the apostle Paul, "Godliness with contentment is great gain."
